Why it's worth checking out
Anderson Park Playground is a substantial play space in Hawthorn East, with a three-level layout connected by sculpted structures, artificial-grass areas and timber walkways. Its range of equipment gives children plenty to explore, from three wave slides, tunnel slides and climbing walls to a rope walkway, monkey bars, horizontal bars and a long flying fox. There are also springers, a see-saw, a spinning carousel, a stand-on spinning disc and suspended discs that create a balance challenge.
Some of the more distinctive features include a large rope-climbing frame, chain ladders, a four-person dune buggy with two steering wheels, coloured balls, a wooden statue and colourful metal cow sculptures. The variety makes the playground suitable for children who enjoy climbing, spinning, sliding and imaginative play, rather than relying on a single central structure. Families should be aware that the equipment is spread across different levels, so younger children may need supervision as they move between areas.
The surrounding park adds room to stay longer. Part of the playground is shaded, with plenty of shaded seating nearby, while a barbecue and tables are positioned fairly close to the play area. Next door is a cricket and football ground set in an amphitheatre-like space, with views across to the Melbourne skyline. Anderson Park also has a one-kilometre circuit for walkers, making it possible to combine playground time with a short walk around the park.
The park has a long local history: the council bought the 5.6-hectare block in November 1911, when it was part of a plant nursery known as the Mount Ida Estate. It is also home to South Hawthorn Tennis Club and is identified as a dog off-leash area. With its layered playground, open sporting ground, walking circuit, shaded seating and nearby barbecue facilities, Anderson Park suits families planning an extended outdoor visit, as well as groups of children who want several kinds of play in one location.
