Batman Park

Batman Park is a compact piece of parkland on the northern side of the Yarra River in Melbourne CBD, at 2A Spencer Street. Established in 1982, it is named after John Batman, one of the early contributors to Melbourne’s founding. The park is smaller than many other CBD parks, but its riverside setting and leafy, shaded feel make it a practical place to pause away from the surrounding streets.

The park has outdoor picnic areas and one BBQ area with two hotplates, making it suited to a casual shared meal or weekend get-together. The BBQ is not bookable and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so groups may want to arrive early. Visitors can also bring their own food and use the surrounding parkland. Nearby bars and pubs are within easy reach, adding flexibility for a relaxed outing in the city.

Walkers and joggers use Batman Park throughout the day, while the open space can accommodate informal games such as cricket and touch football. It is suitable for a quiet solo break, a walk along the river or a low-key gathering with friends and family. The park tends to draw larger crowds on hot, sunny summer days, particularly around the shared BBQ facilities. Drivers can approach via Spencer Street or King Street, although the limited BBQ area and compact scale mean this is better suited to informal visits than large organised events.
