Why it's worth checking out
Boyd Community Hub is a multi-purpose community space in Southbank, Melbourne, occupying the heritage-listed former JH Boyd Girls’ High School site. It brings several local services together, including Southbank Library, artist studios, maternal and child health services, family support and counselling, and playgroups for families with children from birth to six years.
The hub is designed for both everyday community use and organised activities. Its bookable rooms can host meetings, community education programs, seminars, conferences, training, exhibitions, cultural events, celebrations and indoor recreational activities. The Assembly Hall accommodates up to 60 people seated or 70 standing, while the Principal’s Office seats up to 10 and is intended for meetings, interviews and consultations. The site also includes lounge, playgroup and café areas according to its floor plan.
Boyd suits families seeking local support, parents attending playgroups or health services, artists looking for affordable studio space, and community or commercial groups needing a practical venue. Library users and visitors should note that a new, expanded Southbank Library is being developed nearby, with fit-out works underway and an expected opening before the end of 2026. The hub itself is also planned for refurbishment in 2027, with expanded family and children’s services, new spaces and more community programming. Room hire is available seven days a week from 7am to 10pm, excluding public holidays.
