Why it's worth checking out

Brunetti Oro Flinders Lane brings the long-running Brunetti name into a large Melbourne CBD setting, combining an Italian pasticceria, café and restaurant. The Flinders Lane site offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an à la carte menu that moves from toast, eggs and pancakes in the morning to antipasti, pasta, pizza, salads and larger dishes later in the day. Food can also be ordered through Uber Eats, making it an option for a CBD meal at home or work as well as dining in.

The menu has plenty of recognisable Italian choices alongside more substantial plates. Standouts include the carbonara breakfast with poached eggs, bacon and pecorino on fried pizza; the antipasto boards, designed for sharing; ossobuco risotto; and handmade pasta such as spaghetti carbonara, linguine di mare, spaghetti vongole and lamb ragù rigatoni. Pizza ranges from Margherita and Diavola to Prosciutto Parma, Capricciosa and Mantovana. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-friendly options are identified on the menu, with gluten-friendly pasta and pizza available for an additional charge and vegan mozzarella offered for pizza.

The venue is also closely tied to Brunetti Oro’s celebration-cake and gifting business. Customers can order cakes for same-day delivery or collection, arrange next-day delivery across Melbourne, or use the online cake builder to create a celebration cake. The Flinders Lane shop is one of the listed pick-up locations, and the website also promotes a sweet store and seasonal ranges. Inside, the flagship store is described as having cake-filled fridges at the entry, advanced coffee machines using a Brunetti and Lavazza blend, and a 300-seat restaurant. Walk-ins are welcome and reservations are not required, while function enquiries are handled directly by the venue.

Brunetti’s Melbourne story reaches back to 1956, when Giorgio Angele opened his first cake shop in Kew East after coming to Melbourne as pastry chef for the Italian Olympic team. He later bought the Brunetti café in 1991, and the family expanded the business across Melbourne. The Flinders Lane flagship opened in 2017, while Brunetti Oro began in 2021 under Giorgio’s son, Yuri Angele. With its broad menu and kids’ choices including pasta, pizza and chicken cotoletta with chips, the restaurant suits families and groups, while the walk-in format and all-day Italian focus also work for casual CBD meals, coffee stops and cake pick-ups.
