Buxton Contemporary

Buxton Contemporary is a public gallery on the University of Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts Southbank campus, presenting contemporary Australian art through exhibitions, commissions, publishing and learning initiatives. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm, with free entry, making it an accessible stop in Melbourne’s Arts Precinct for a focused gallery visit or a wider day of cultural activities.

The gallery’s programme is built around solo and thematic exhibitions, with the listed 2026 exhibition Poetry goes no further than language: A historical moment of art becoming art again running from 1 May to 3 October. Visitors can also take part in related programming, including a floor talk by Darcey Bella Arnold on 22 August and guided tours scheduled across the exhibition period. These events offer a way to engage with the work beyond a self-guided visit, whether you are visiting alone, with friends or as part of an organised group.

Buxton Contemporary also offers access to collection highlights. Its foundation came from a significant donation of contemporary Australian art by Michael and Janet Buxton, alongside philanthropic support through the Michael and Janet Buxton Foundation. The gallery opened in 2018 and continues their collecting ethos of supporting contemporary artists and engaging with the development of artistic practice. That connection between collecting, exhibiting and education gives the venue a clear place within the University setting and Melbourne’s contemporary art community.

The gallery’s learning focus extends to tertiary teaching and learning collaborations with University of Melbourne colleagues, as well as exhibition programmes designed for schools. Those offerings make it particularly relevant for students, educators and school groups, while the changing exhibitions and free admission also suit solo visitors and art-focused outings with friends. Buxton Contemporary additionally has sophisticated spaces available for private events, so the venue serves both as a public gallery and as an event setting within Southbank’s Arts Precinct.
