Why it's worth checking out
In The Brick Spa & Hotel brings spa treatments and short-stay accommodation together at 22 Wellington Street, St Kilda. The spa’s focus is massage, with different experiences and durations intended to suit guests seeking either deeper therapeutic work or a quieter way to unwind. Treatments are carried out by trained, experienced therapists in a calm setting, and the spa says it uses premium-quality products. For a longer break, guests can choose between a Spa Package and a Stay-Only option.
The setting is a major part of the experience. The building dates to 1924 and retains its original red-brick facade, giving the venue a distinctly historic character rather than the feel of a newly built day spa. Inside, hinoki scent, earthy colours and a bamboo-filled backyard create a considered, restful atmosphere. Original leadlight windows are also part of the restored building, bringing coloured light into the interior. The result is a space shaped as much by its materials and history as by its treatments.
The restoration was led by designer Byron Tang, whose approach centred on uncovering and working with the existing structure instead of replacing it. The building was taken back to its brick, timber and steel framework, with damaged elements repaired and sound materials retained. Reclaimed timber, steel and repurposed warehouse materials feature throughout the fit-out, reflecting the venue’s stated commitment to responsible design. The building’s background adds another layer of interest: it was historically known as the Taj Mahal flats and is described on the site as an Arts & Crafts building.
In The Brick suits visitors looking for a massage in a quieter, design-led setting, as well as those wanting to combine a treatment with an overnight stay. It offers a more immersive alternative to a standard appointment, with the hotel component allowing guests to extend their time in the space. Located in St Kilda and described as around 20 minutes from Melbourne’s city centre, it can work for a local reset or a short city escape. The spa operates Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 7pm, while the hotel is open daily.
