La Camera brings Italian dining to Southbank’s Southgate precinct, with a setting that looks across the Yarra towards Melbourne. The restaurant has two alfresco balconies for outdoor meals and city views, while the interior is decorated with vintage black-and-white family photographs. It is an easy option before or after time in Melbourne’s nearby arts, sporting and entertainment precinct, with the Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, Federation Square and Eureka Skydeck among the attractions listed within walking distance.

The menu focuses on traditional Italian cooking, with Roman-style pizzas, pasta, risotto and dishes based on family recipes. The venue specifically highlights its lasagna, Nonna Chiara’s porchetta and tiramisu, alongside familiar options such as spaghetti bolognese, spaghetti carbonara, pumpkin risotto and Margherita pizza. Vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan or dairy-free options are identified on selected dishes, and the restaurant also provides a children’s menu for guests under 12. The kitchen asks diners to speak with their waiter about dietary requirements.

There is a family history behind the room: the owners say the restaurant has been operated by the same family since its Chapel Street days in 1992. That background, together with the photographs on the walls and the emphasis on recipes from Nonna Chiara, gives the venue a more personal feel than a purely formal dining room. La Camera also offers a bar, cocktails, wine and beer, with a listed happy-hour period on selected afternoons. Lunch specials run from Wednesday to Friday between midday and 3pm from February to November.
