Labour in Vain

On Brunswick Street in the heart of Fitzroy, Labour in Vain is a pub built around drinks, conversation and a relaxed sense of place. Its intimate bar carries 12 beers on tap alongside seasonal beers, wines, spirits and liqueurs, giving visitors plenty of choice without turning the venue into a restaurant. The front bar is suited to settling in with a drink, watching Brunswick Street go by or striking up a conversation with people from different backgrounds.

The rooftop beer garden is one of the pub’s defining spaces. It is undercover, heated during winter and fitted with misters for summer, making it usable across the seasons. Food is not part of the venue’s own offering: Labour in Vain does not have a kitchen, although customers are welcome to order from a favourite restaurant. Reservations are not currently available, so visits are walk-in only. The pub’s mix of communal atmosphere, rooftop seating and pool makes it a natural fit for groups, while the front bar also works for solo visitors who want somewhere informal to have a drink and observe the neighbourhood. The website describes the venue as welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds. Bands are not currently scheduled, despite the pub’s long association with live music.

There is considerable history behind the Fitzroy address. The hotel was built by George Hyde, who received a publican’s licence in 1853, and its original bluestone walls are still part of the building. After closing as a hotel in the 1920s, the site was converted into two shops before reopening as a public house in 1998. The venue’s history lists the Leopoldseder family as modern proprietors from 2005 onwards. That long-running pub identity, combined with its practical rooftop and front-bar spaces, gives Labour in Vain a grounded Brunswick Street character rather than a dining-led one.
