The Motley Bauhaus

The Motley Bauhaus is a Carlton bar, performance venue and arts space gathered under one roof at 118 Elgin Street. It is designed for more than a quick drink: visitors might arrive for an independent theatre production, browse work in the gallery, join a workshop or settle in for a relaxed night at the bar. The venue describes itself as an independent, inclusionary multidisciplinary art and craft house, with a focus on bringing artists and audiences into the same community.

The front bar has pressed-tin walls and a warm, softly lit feel, while an upstairs gallery provides additional seating in a brighter setting. There are two bar areas and a downstairs outdoor courtyard, giving groups a choice of spaces to settle into. The venue says bookings are not required for the bar, although larger groups are encouraged to make contact by email. It also offers free live music, including jazz on Saturdays, as well as occasional free entertainment and Friday afternoon barbecues.

Food is centred on substantial toasties made with sourdough and a four-cheese blend. The fillings listed by the venue include roast lamb with potato and gravy, pulled beef with coleslaw and pickles, roast pumpkin with basil and thyme, and canned spaghetti. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. The drinks list covers classic cocktails, house creations, boutique wines, four gluten-free beers on tap and a broad selection of alcohol-free alternatives, making the bar workable for both drinkers and those choosing not to drink.

For live performance, the brick-lined Motley Theatrette seats between 53 and 75 people depending on the stage layout. It has a flexible lighting setup and wheelchair accessibility, and has hosted productions by independent artists. Upstairs, a less formal stage is used for cabaret, music, burlesque and stand-up, with the programme described as continuing to develop. The gallery is dedicated to emerging and independent artists, with workshops and studios supporting people who prefer making art to simply viewing it.

The result is a venue suited to a varied Carlton night: a solo visit for live music or a drink, a casual catch-up in the front bar, a larger group gathering, or an evening built around a show. Its Bauhaus-inspired philosophy places equal value on art and craft, with experimentation, skill-sharing and community at the centre. The venue is open Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm until 1am.
