Victoria Police Museum

Victoria Police Museum offers a focused look at the history of policing and crime in Victoria, in a new exhibition space at 313 Spencer Street, Docklands. The museum brings together more than 300 historical police objects and artefacts, presented through displays covering major investigations, historical and modern policing, forensic evidence and police equipment. Its exhibitions are designed to be explored and interacted with, giving visitors more than a purely chronological account of the organisation’s past.

Among the collection’s most distinctive pieces is Australia’s largest collection of Kelly Gang armour. The displays also examine some of Melbourne’s most notorious crimes, alongside the practical tools and evidence associated with police work. Another notable subject is the invention of the wireless patrol, described by the museum as pioneering world-first technology. Together, these themes connect individual objects with wider changes in policing, crime detection and Melbourne’s social history.

The museum is part of the Historical Services Unit within Victoria Police’s Media, Communications and Engagement Department. Its work involves conserving, interpreting and managing significant items, while producing exhibitions, events and education programs and overseeing an extensive archive and collection. That institutional connection gives the venue a direct link to the history it presents, while its displays are intended to encourage appreciation of Victoria’s policing history and crime history across generations.

There is also a long story behind the museum itself. Victoria Police developed an early crime and criminal-behaviour museum in 1902, initially as an instructional resource for police rather than a public attraction. The collection later became available to the public, with a major exhibition in 1956 drawing 22,500 visitors. After permanent locations at Russell Street Police Headquarters and the World Trade Centre, the museum moved to Docklands. It is a suitable stop for visitors interested in Melbourne and Victoria’s social and cultural history, whether visiting independently or as part of a shared museum outing. Entry is free, and the museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm.
