Yugen Dining is a subterranean Japanese and Asian-fusion restaurant in South Yarra, Melbourne, designed around a more immersive take on fine dining. Its setting is cavernous and design-led, hidden beneath the busy streets above, giving the venue a distinct sense of arrival without relying on a traditional dining-room format. The main restaurant seats 85 guests, while the venue also includes a sophisticated cocktail bar and several more exclusive spaces.

There are a few ways to experience the food. The à la carte menu combines traditional Japanese flavours with broader Asian influences, including expertly prepared nigiri, premium sashimi, selected cuts of Wagyu and seasonal produce. Yugen says it works with trusted local suppliers, with the menu shaped around high-quality ingredients and bold, distinctive flavours. Plant-based diners are also catered for with vegetarian and vegan options, while the dessert menu focuses on handcrafted sweets influenced by modern Japanese and Asian cuisine.

For a more structured meal, the Chef’s Experience presents six courses for $180 per person, with the option to add matched wines and sake. Groups of seven or more can choose the $170-per-person banquet set menu, with premium caviar service and other supplements available as add-ons. The venue also offers late-night food for guests having drinks at the bar, making it suitable for a lighter visit as well as a full dinner. These formats give couples, small groups and larger parties different ways to settle in, depending on the occasion and appetite.

Yugen’s more distinctive spaces include the six-seat Yugen Omakase and the Golden Orb, a suspended VIP dining area intended to offer a particularly unusual version of Japanese fine dining. Together with the cocktail bar and the main restaurant, these options make Yugen a venue for diners looking beyond a straightforward meal—whether that means a carefully paced tasting experience, an intimate omakase booking or drinks and a late-night bite. Its focus is firmly on elevated dining, seasonal produce and a dramatic underground atmosphere in the centre of South Yarra.
