Why it's worth checking out
Luna Park Melbourne is a family amusement park in St Kilda, offering a mix of gentle rides, family attractions and larger thrill rides in a distinctive seaside setting. Its ride line-up is organised for different ages and comfort levels: Little Lunies rides are designed for toddlers and younger children, Family Rides cater to groups with younger thrill-seekers, and the Thrill Seekers range brings bigger swings, spins and movement for those who want something more intense. Park Entry and ride access are handled through the Ticket Box, with options for single rides and unlimited rides.
The park’s most distinctive attraction is its historic carousel, built in 1913 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and installed at Luna Park in 1923. It features 68 original hand-carved and painted horses and a Limonaire Frères band organ, and has received a Historical Carousel Award from the National Carousels Association USA. The restored Luna Palace is another notable space, currently used for performances including Finucane Smith’s Dance Palace. The park also promotes special events such as Luna Dark, a Halloween costume event, alongside function spaces for private and corporate occasions.
For families, Luna Park offers more than rides. Food outlets include Luna Cafe, Luna Diner, the Frozen Zone and the Fairy Floss Hut, although some operate only on limited days. The park also runs school activity bookings and children’s birthday parties. Its Party Tram 96 is a restored W Class tram with seating for up to 32 guests, an alfresco deck and a dedicated one-hour party session. Birthday packages can include full-day park access, unlimited rides, food for children and adult ride tickets; adult supervision remains required throughout the celebration.
Luna Park first opened in St Kilda on 13 December 1912 and has remained at the same iconic location for more than a century. That long history, combined with the theatrical entrance, restored carousel and mix of modern and traditional attractions, gives the venue a character that is different from a standard indoor play centre. It suits families planning a full day out, children’s parties, school groups and larger celebrations, while the event spaces provide options for weddings, engagements and corporate functions. Visitors should check the current ride, food and event information before travelling, as availability can vary with maintenance, weather and scheduled operating days.
